The Sneetches by Dr. Seuss is an effective allegory for the stupidity of prejudice and it was brave of Dr. Seuss to come out with this tale in 1961, right in the middle of the civil rights movement. An interesting thing about Dr. Seuss was that he didn't care about whether people bought his stories, he wrote about the topics he was passionate about. The story ends on an optimistic note, with all the Sneetches realizing that they had been foolishly wasting time and money on a superficial symbol of privilege, that really had no meaning except the one they chose to give it. They claim that classical music (or jazz in some cases) is the only sort worth listening to, or that watching Shakespeare and Opera makes them better than the general populace. They assume that they are simply smarter than the masses because they do not fill their minds with pop music and hollywood dribble.
As someone who likes classical music and Shakespeare, I can tell you with confidence that these people are a bunch of poncey morons.
